DIETRICH, Friedrich Gottlieb. 1768-1850
Der Wintergärtner
the Gädicke Brothers, Weimar, 1803. Three hundred plants for the urban gardener. Covering some 140 native species, the first volume (first edition 1801) discusses winter-hardy decorative plants and food crops as well as species that must be moved indoors during the harshest conditions. The second volume describes over 160 non-native flowers (including New World plants) that flourish in Germany. The Winter Gardener remained a favorite well into the 1830s. A nice set (without the one-leaf Gädicke stock list at the end of Vol. 2). Dochnahl, Bibliotheca hortensis 37. Contemporary brown paper over stiff boards (tips rubbed), large central panels of onlaid marbled paper enclosed by a gilt roll, flat spines gilt with green and red paper labels (modern paper labels removed from the base of the spines), green edges [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
