Jan Zrzavy
Krasby k Erbenove Kytici
Prague: Aventinum, 1927. Quarto 30x22.5 cm., folio wrappers, 14 leaves, loose as issued. Album of the reproductions of Jan Zrzavý's drawings to Erben's poetry cycle "Bouquet," displayed in a commemorative exhibition illustrating Kytice z povesti národních (A Bouquet of National Legends). Kytice is a collection of folk ballads originally published in 1853 by Karel Jaromír Erben (1811-1870) that had strong reverberations for Czech nationalism and is revered to this day. Erben was a folklorist, poet and archivist who spearheaded Czech Romanticism and Czech national revival. The present work appeared as a special printing for the guests of the opening of the exhibition Aventina Mansard on 16 November 1927. It is a bobliofile edition, with 14 sheets of Japanese imitation and envelope, printed by Neubert & Sons. The first illustration is a printing tag, the other thirteen are illustrations to Kytice. The limitation is not stated but must have been small, and each copy was issued to a guest with their handwritten name on the colophon. This copy states that the guest who received it was the Mansard Director A. Kaláb. OCLC finds only one holding worldwide, in British Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
