UK: Methuen, London, 1948. The First UK printing published by Methuen, London in 1948. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with just a little pushing to the spine ends. The gilt titling remains bright. Moderate offsetting to the blank end -papers due to the quality of the paper stock used. Light toning to the text block and page edges. Some very mild spotting to the text-block which has encroached very slightly onto the page edges in a few places. Free from inscriptions. A small previous owner's bookplate to the upper front pastedown (the noted bibliophile F.R. Furber) and a small 'Sotherans' Bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. The scarce WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped and is in Very Good+ condition. Small amount of loss at the upper spine end and the corners. Some splitting along the front flap fold. A little rubbing with mild age related markings in places. Some clear tape reinforcement along the edges and folds to the verso. The wrapper remains very presentable in the Brodart archival wrapper. 'In this remarkable book, Harold Acton writes a witty and vivid account of his first thirty-five years of his life from his boyhood among the international colony of dilettanti in Florence before the First World War, to his maturity when he discovered his spiritual home in Peking before the old Chinese culture was destroyed.
