Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, in the Poultry London 1785. In publisher's original boards and paper spine, without label. Uncut page edges. 9 x 5 1/2 inches. Second edition. With initial blank, half-title page, title page, dedication [3], advertisement, contents [11], 1-528, Appendix [6], publishers advertisement for Boswell's Life of Johnson, blank. Book plate of Edward J. Thomson, the British scholar, novelist, historian and translator. Light damp staining to the edges of a few preliminary pages, all others are fairly clean with text block tight and square. A remarkable unbound, unaltered survivor in the form in which the book was originally published. Most often the purchaser would have send the book to a binder for custom rebinding, commonly quarter of full leather. In this form most copies would not survive use or even exposure on a shelf.
