1700. Verlag [4] engraved prints.Complete series of four spectacular engraved views of Peter the Greats most important victorious battles in the Russo-Swedish War, also known as the Great Northern War (1700-1721). They celebrate the Russian defeat of Sweden and present Russia to the world as a great European power. Peter the Great (1672-1725) commissioned paintings of these battles from the Paris painter Pierre-Denis Martin le jeune (1663?-1742) as well as the series of four enormous prints based on Martins paintings by the Paris engravers Nicolas Martin Larmessin (1640-1725), Charles-Louis Simonneau (1645-1728) and Maurice Baquoy (1675-1747) in Paris. The plates were never further revised, so the present set, like nearly all sets show the plates in this second state. The present set, however, is printed on thick wove paper (with no visible watermark). With a tear (repaired) into the sky in the first Poltava print, a few small marginal tears (two slightly affecting the caption, repaired), occasional minor foxing and the foot margins trimmed down to the impression of the edge of the plate (still leaving space below the caption), but still in very good condition. A magnificent series of four enormous engraved battle scenes, commissioned by and celebrating the victories of Peter the Great.l Pamjatniki, Russkoj kultury katalog (1966), nos. 579, 681, 711 (3 prints) Rovinskii, Russkikh gravirovannykh portretov, Iii (188 … [Click Below for Full Description]
