These works form an outstanding and influential contribution to the reform of the pharmacopoeia in the second half of the 17th century.In his commentary on the standard Augsburg pharmacopoeia, Zwelfer reveals a bellicose nature in the tradition of Paracelsus. Objections (animadversiones) are made to almost every recipe, voiced in a tone of sarcasm and invective that aroused not only the Collegium Medicum of Augsburg, but almost everyone mentioned in the book, in cities from Montpellier to Venice. In Venice, Zwelfers criticism of Otto Tacheniuss volatile viperine salt (a secret medicine that had helped him make a fortune) inspired Tachenius to write his Hippocrates chimicus, which gained more fame than anything Zwelfer ever wrote. In vol. 2 Zwelfer again launches an attack on Tacheniuss work (pp. 1-206), along with another on a work by Franciscus Verny (pp. 207-231). But Zwelfers scathing attacks bore abundant fruit: sixteen years later the Augsburg Collegium, aroused by his attacks, published a renovated and augmented Pharmacopoeia Augustana.Each volume with an owners inscription of Joannis Coste, Pharmacopolae 1676, as well as a library stamp of the Wellcome Library (incl. their cancellation stamp).
