Maffei, S.
Del Monte Bolca della sua pesciaia e degli annessi monti colonnari ad uso specialmente de' viaggiatori naturalisti co' suoi rami.
Verlag [Verona, Moroni, 1792]. 8vo (20.1 x 13.6 cm). 21 pp. [numbered 219-239] 8 large, folded engraved plates. Contemporary patterned paper boards. Rare treatise on the geology of the Monte Bolca, famous for its superbly preserved fossil fish of the Eocene age. Most plates show fine examples of the fossils found. The work also contains a note on Monte Baldo (with a nice woodblock vignette), and on the fishes of Lake Garda. Apparently it is an extract from Maffei's Compendio della Verona illustrata, which was first published in 1731-1732. Francesco Scipione marchese di Maffei (1675-1755) is better known as a playwright, art critic, and philosopher. Boards rubbed, chip to the lower inner margin on one text leaf, affecting a few words, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Brunet 3, p. 1291. Not in Dean not in Ward and Carrozzi.
