FIRST EDITION 1877. 8vo, approximately 230 x 145 mm, 9 x 5¾ inches, engraved plate of beetles as frontispiece, pages: xxv, 256 including index, plus 2 pages of adverts, original publisher's blind stamped green cloth, gilt lettering to spine, original yellow endpapers. Small neat repair to closed tear at top of inner margin of title page, small neat repair to 1 outer margin due to bad opening, with slight loss of paper, several pages have a tiny nick to lower margins, endpapers, frontispiece and title page have light foxing, occasional tiny spot to margins, neat ink name to first blank endpaper (Henry E. Moore), otherwise a very good clean copy. Thomas Vernon Wollaston, English entomologist especially known for his studies of Coleoptera inhabiting several North Atlantic archipelagoes. Wollaston's religious beliefs effectively prevented him from supporting Charles Darwin's theories of evolution.
