In 1797 he began his military career as a Royal Prussian Lieutenant in the Second Engineers Brigade; taught fortifications and fortress war at the Military Engineering Academy in Potsdam. Compiled the 'Encyclopadie der Kriegswissenschaften und der Kriegskunst'. He was a prolific scientist who wrote on astronomy, geodesy, economics and architecture. He was the first to 'apply mathematics for the well-being of the state and its citizens, not so much to questions of distribution and political welfare as to economic law and theory, and above all to a multitude of technical questions that fall under the jurisdiction of the government: structural engineering in construction inspections; ballistics for artillery; mechanics and machinery in mills, transport, manufacturing, and mining.' - Rudiger Campe: 'The Game of Probability: Literature and Calculation from Pascal to Kleist' (2012)."
