With a full-page woodcut (10 x 8.5 cm) on the title-page (repeated at the beginning of the main text), Blum's woodcut device below the colophon. Contemporary blind-tooled black calf over tapered wooden boards, each board in a panel design, 2 strap fastenings with engraved decoration in the brass clasps and catchplates. The binder used 2 fragments from a manuscript Vulgate Bible in a humanistic hand."

[253], [3 blank] pp.Very rare third or less likely second edition, the first dated edition with the expanded text, of one of the earliest practical military handbooks for modern warfare, first published in 1530. It includes a guide to besieging fortified towns or castles, sample articles for military service and a sample oath, kinds and amounts of supplies and equipment needed for an artillery regiment, including cannons and carriages, a guide to holding council, a guide to the watches, the number of horses needed, information on stocking an armoury, expenses for gun powder and other supplies and much more that would be useful to army officers.With a contemporary(?) owner's inscription on the title-page; a longer one by Marla Schumann on a flyleaf dated 1653; a later one below it referring to Markgraf Albrecht I's 10 August 1555 manuscript Kriegs-Ordnung; a pencil inscription on the blank verso of the colophon; and bookplates of Prince Adalbert of Prussia (1811-1873) and Mark Dineley (1901-1975) of Wiltshire, and with early manuscript marginal notes and occasional underlining. With a few marginal worm holes, minor stains in the gutter margin throughout; a minor stain at the head of 6 leaves, slightly affecting the text and generally slightly dirty, but still in good condition. The binding is worn, with the surface of the leather flaked and the head and foot of the spine damaged, but the surface has been stabilized and the binding remains structurally sound.
