Plantin - Engravings Passe, Crispin Van De"
Les planches des heures Gravees par Crispin van de Passe "
Anvers, editions du Musee Plantin-Moretus, n.d. (ca. 1901?). Full leather binding on five raised bands with gilt fillets on front- and backcover within line-borders (original wrappers preserved), all edges gilt, margins of the verso of the covers with roll-tooled ornamentation, (X), (46)pp., 46 copper engravings by Crispin de Passe after designs by Maarten de Vos. Ca. 21 x 17 cm.'Tirage fait sur les cuivres originaux'. Introduction by Max Rooses. First edition of a suite of 46 engravings designed to illustrate a Plantin edition of a Book of Hours. According to the Plantin archives they were commissioned one year before the death of Christopher Plantin, but they were never used. The first curator of the museum, Max Rooses, retraced the authorship which had been lost during the more than 300 years that the Plantin Press existed. Binding a bit discoloured, but still a very fine copy of an example of Dutch-Flemish book-illustration in the 16th century."
