London: The University of London Institute of Historical Research, 1957-1989. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 12" by 8.5". Various. A ten volume set of this illustrated history of Wiltshire. Ten of original 18 volume set. Volumes include: Volume I: Part I, Volume I: Part II, Volume II, Volume V, Volume VI, Volume VIII, Volume IX, Volume X, Volume XI, Volume XII. Volumes were printed out of sequence, however volumes II and VI are from the later re issue by Dawson for the London Institute of Historical Research. All other volumes appear to be first issue. Part of the Victoria History of the Counties of England Series, an encyclopedic record of England's places and people which began in 1899 and was originally dedicated to Queen Victoria. Many of these volumes edited by R.B. Pugh, editor for the VCH between 1949 and 1977. Pugh is best remembered for his contribution to this work and for expanding and modernising the project. His histories are used as a general model for the histories in the series. In red cloth bindings with five volumes with original dustwrappers. Dustwrappers to volumes Xi, XII and I pt 2 are unclipped. Externally, generally very smart with some minor shelfwear. Volume I pt I with splitting to the joints, backstrip lifting and spine faded. Volume V with fading to the spine. Volume IX with marks to boards. Volume XI with remnants of bookplate to front free-endpaper and tape marks to front pastedown.
