A scarce, first edition, first issue of Alexander Cumming"s informative treatise on clock and watch-work. Collated, complete, with sixteen folding plates. Errata leaf to the rear. The folding plates remain in a bright, crisp condition. Bookplate to the front pastedown, M Sainsbury. ESTC reference no: T140747. The ESTC entry for this work questions whether this is a large paper issue. Alexander Cumming or Cummings was a Scottish watchmaker and inventor who was the first to patent the flush toilet in 1775. He invented the S trap to retain water permanently in the waste pipe to prevent sewer gases from entering buildings. This is Cummings" major publication and explains pendulums, mechanisms, and the functioning of watches and clocks. It also contains an essay on the "Improvement of Watch-work" which has a separate title page. In a modern half calf binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear. Bookplate to the front pastedown, "M Sainsbury". Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional scattered spots, heavier to the first and last few pages in addition to pages 120-132.
