Illustrated Books: Zürich Orell, Füssli und Comp 1823. 4to.[πii] 1-124, 131, 14-234, lithographed additional title and 71 plates and maps numbered 1-72 (nos 14 &15 used for the folding plate of Athens) Some spotting throughout effecting some text and plates Plate XiX heavily spotted. Quarter calf gilt over marbled boards. Head of spine repaired, joints rubbed. Black & white lithographs. The work consists of a series of articles about ancient Greek life, monuments and antiquities, each accompanied by a plate. The plates show views, maps, monuments and statues. A number of the plates are signed by I Brodtman and are new lithographic versions of earlier plates; some of the architectural plates are after Stuart & Revett. Other of the plates are after Leake ,Pirenesi ,Visconti Choisel Gouffier &c The view of Athens ( plates XIV & XV) shows the Acropolis above the busy Ottoman town, with many minarets showing the fortified walls and the Roman antiquities, and looking across the sea to the Peloponnesus.
