This volume was the only one published of an intended multi-volume work recording the results of Lhuyd's remarkable tour of Wales, parts of Scotland, Ireland and Brittany between 1697 and 1701 to collect material for a survey of the natural history, geology, history, archaeology, place-names and philology of the Celtic-speaking countries. This Glossography included his lexicographical fieldwork and brought together a whole set of pioneering lexicographical achievements: the first comparative wordlist of Welsh, Irish, and the languages most closely related to them; the first Breton-English dictionary to be printed; the first Irish-English dictionary to be printed; the first printed record of the differences between dialects of Scottish Gaelic, and the first appearance in print of any specimen of Manx.
