Steward, Samuel M. [aka Phil Andros] introduction by Benjamin Musser
Pan and the Fire-Bird
New York: Henry Harrison, Pub. 1930. 58p., foreword, a collection of short prose pieces including several dialogues, four pages have short closed tears in fore-edge margins likely due to clumsy opening of uncut pages by original owner, else very good first edition in blue cloth boards, top edge stained blue. Steward's first book, a collection of prose in a Hellenic vein with some Christian pieces (inluding a profane love story involving a nun and the figure of Death in a dialogue). Not in Young (only his "Chapters from an Autobiography" and the Phil Andros sex books appear there). Missing jacket. Steward was included in Gertrude Stein's literary circle in the 1930s, became involved with Dr. Kinsey in the 1950s, worked as a tattoo artist through the 1960s and also became a gay porn writer as Phil Andros (among other pseudonyms). He spent his final years in Oakland and Berkeley. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Bolerium Books, ABAA [USA]
