London: John Bowles at Mercers Hall in Cheapside, c. 1690 or later. Double-page engraving of the Holy Land facing West, incl. four cartouches with allegorical framework and vignettes with scenes from the life of Christ in the bottom half; note the manuscript annotation in the upper left quadrant (“one square is = 22 miles”). Condition: good except some creasing and small perforation at centerfold. Biblical map illustrating the Gospel of St Matthew (see lower right “Place this Mapp before the Gospel of St. Matthew”) incl. the fifth travel of St Paul narrated in Acts. The vignettes show the Nativity, the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ, as well as the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles (Pentecost). The map is dedicated to Gilbert Burnet, Bishop of Salisbury and Chancellor of the Order of the Garter. An earlier version (with different imprint and dedication cartouche) was published by Joseph Moxon in Amsterdam in 1690. L6B316
