No Publisher. Sur L'Edition de MDXXI (1521)., No Place. The Earliest Known edition. Spuriously dated, the book actually dates from the early to mid 19th Century. Small octavo, contemporary quarter calf over marbled paper boards, the spine with a small floral decoration in gilt and with a red leather spine label titled in gilt, marbled endpapers. 108 pp., printed in red and black, decorative initials, Frontispiece and 4 additional inserted plates (on text paper, but not included in the pagination), illustrated throughout with diagrams, sigils and engravings. The paper is off-white, and is in superior condition (it is often quite browned and fragile). One group of pages sits slightly proud - the sewing is slightly loose but still holding firm. Small chip to leather at spine head. A very good, clean copy, nicer by far than most copies we have handled (ok, that sounds grand, but we've only ever handled one other copy). In English and Italian the Dragon Rouge is known as 'The Grand Grimoire'. The Dragon Rouge is a handbook which explains how to enter into a pact with three Infernal Spirits especially Lucifuge Rofocale. It is one of the most notorious of the little books of black magic known as grimoires. Its anonymous author claims that the work is derived from the wisdom of the legendary King Solomon, and then sets down instructions for the creation of a number of magical implements: blasting rod (wand), talisman and magic circle that are to be used to summon the demon Lucifuge Rofocale, who is then bound over to serve the sorcerer.
