Excellent near fine copies, the bindings firm, the contents clean and bright throughout and free from any inscriptions or stamps. A scarce collection of this important black nationalist newsletter, published in exile (first in Havana, Cuba, then in Peking, China), by leading civil rights activists Robert and Mabel Williams. Robert Williams (1925-1996) began publishing The Crusader intermittently from 1959 when he was president of the Monroe, North Carolina branch of the NAACP. Living in an area dominated at that time by the Ku Klux Klan, he became increasingly radical in his outlook, promoting armed Black self-defence, and rejecting the methods of passive resistance advocated by the non-violent wing of the civil rights movement.
