Wells, H.G.
The Door in the Wall’, UK limited edition, signed by H.G. Wells and A.L. Coburn
Grant Richards. H.G. Wells (1915) ‘The Door in the Wall and Other Stories‘, UK limited edition, published by Grant Richards, London. One of only 60 copies signed by H.G. Wells, and the artist Alvin Langdon Coburn, this being no. 31. Complete with full set of plates. Perhaps the rarest of all H.G. Wells books. The book was published in 1911 as an unsigned edition, issued by Mitchell Kennerley in the US , limited to 600 copies, divided for the US and UK market. Later (1915) another issue was released of 300 copies with reduced plates. Our book on offer is the only edition signed by H.G. Wells and A.L. Coburn and was limited to 60 copies only, making it exceptionally scarce, especially in this condition. Not all sixty copies will have survived the passage of time and we can only trace one copy sold at auction in the past 20 years. The book has spawned a number of facsimile editions including the 2016 Folio Society centenary edition. Condition: near fine considering the age of the book. Slight foxing to the spine and the rough cut page edge block. Light pusheds to corners. No previous owners’ inscriptions, no marks of any sorts. All ten plates are present. The original fragile paper title label on the backstrip is present. Internally clean with typical ghosting opposite the photographic plates. A nice copy. About the tales in this book: “The tales contained in The Door in the Wall are at once distinct and thematically interwoven. The title story explores the tension between the rational, scientific universe and the realm of aesthetics and imagination through its protagonist, th … [Click Below for Full Description]
