Published in London in two volumes in 1788 this is the scarce first Edition of this work of collected pieces about London and its people by the English actor, playwright and poet George Alexander Stevens, Stevens was born in Holborn, London in 1710, and died in 1780, he was also known as a popular songwriter, especially for his bawdy drinking songs in this posthumously printed work compiled from his papers, there are accounts of the seedier underside of London, including Brothels, prostitution, gambling, drinking, crime, a visit to Bedlam, the authentic life of a woman of the town, stockbrokers ( stockjobbers) Covent Garden, kept mistresses and their keepers, the art of seduction, Street Walkers, Female Vanity, London city characters described, life of a young criminal, Private scenes of prostitution, and much more the book is in two volumes, 268pp & 286pp, here bound together in one volume, in a recent half leather binding with marbled paper covered boards, just under 7 inches tall approx. The binding is in excellent condition, internally some occasional mild foxing marks and light browning to page edges else contents generally in nice condition.
