And the other, The yerely coniectures meete for Husbandmen. To these is likewise added a Treatise of the Arte of Graffing and Planting of trees.
London: Edward Allde, 1593. Vellum. Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. A very scarce copy of this important horticultural and apiculturist work. Being two parts in one, as called for, this early edition contains the first English book on gardening and the first British bee book. Illustrated, with several woodcut ornamental letters, headpieces, tail pieces and the occasional vignette. This includes four woodcut illustrations of mazes and knot gardens. Collation: A-Y4, 2A-2M4. An early edition of the first English book on gardening which was first issued in 1563 under a slightly different title 'A most Brief and pleasant treatise'. The 'profitable instruction of the perfect ordering of Bees' is considered the first British bee book and was first published as an appendage to this gardening work in the 1568 edition. 'The Profitable Instruction' is the very first manual for beekeepers. It gives advice to husbandmen and was ahead of its time regarding this subject as beekeeping and books regarding the matter became very popular the following century. ESTC No. S104120. With loss to the title page (A1) and therefore the verso of title page. Minor loss to the penultimate leaf, Mm3 which only affects two words to the bottom of page 90. Severe loss to the final leaf, Mm4 affecting the final paragraph of page 91. The collation matches that of ESTC. With several leaves mispaginated however the register is continuous. Page 8 is mispaginated as 4, page 153 as 162, pages 156-157 as 154-165, page 160 as 168. Thomas Hill was an astrologer, author and translator. … [Click Below for Full Description]
