[8] 1-6, 9-48, 53-124 pp. (lacks 7 leaves: title with portrait woodcut on verso, and second leaf [NB: the Licencia de la Orden. El Maestro Fr. Miguel Burguente is misbound before fol. *1], B4 (i.e pp. 6-7), N1-2 (i.e. pp. 49-52), and 2I1-4 (pp. 125-128 the 3-page table); 9 lines of the lower part of 2E1 (i.e. pp. 109/10) torn away. Nineteenth-century blind-stamped calf binding laid down on new boards and spine, edges and margins repaired throughout (affecting a few words of text). This is an imperfect copy of an exceptionally rare book, priced accordingly. First edition of this important and rare work in the Spanish and Mixtec languages. The author was well positioned to undertake this heroic effort: he was a native of Oaxaca, and labored for 28 years as a missionary among the Mijes Indians, whose difficult dialect he perfectly mastered. The present volume was printed by Manuela Cerezo, widow of Miguel de Ortega y Bonilla. It is a remarkable fact that she was one of the most prolific publishers in Puebla at this time, even though women were generally excluded from the public realm of discourse. Women such as Manuela Cerezo not only challenged the patriarchal system but were accepted and validated by the same system (see Circe Hernández Sautto, "Impresos poblanos en la Biblioteca José María Lafragua: Siglos XVII-XVIII" Revista de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras No. 6, 2006, pp. 206-219).
