Philadelphia: American Academy of Music, 1870. PRESIDENT GRANT IS INVITED TO A PARTY, BUT DID HE ATTEND?GRANT, U[lysses] S. U. S. Grant, President of the United States. The pleasure of your Company is respectfully solicited at La Coterie Carnival and Bal Masque, Wednesday Evening, January 19th, 1870, at the American Academyof Music, Philadelphia. Oblong 12mo invitation printed in red and blue on white silk, 3 ¾ x 6 ¾", inside frame. Fine. [Philadelphia: 1870]. $600.00 Philadelphia's American Academy of Music incorporated in 1852, and opened in 1857. It is one of America's grandest 19th century opera houses, and the oldest grand opera house still used for its original purpose. We've looked, but haven't found anything that would indicate Grant accepted the invitation and attended. We do know that it was in this hall that he was nominated for his second term of office in 1872.We have never seen another example of this silk. Fine.
