MAUGHAM, W. Somerset.
Of Human Bondage. A Novel.
London: William Heinemann, 1915. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles in gilt on spine and front cover, Maugham's device in gilt on front board, publisher's device in blind on rear board. Ink ownership inscription of Sir Lees Knowles, 1st Baronet CVO (1857-1928) recording his purchase in 1917. Spine ends lightly bumped, minor wear to extremities, faint mark of a removed octagonal label to front board, slight foxing to edges, rear hinge split although sometime furbished and front hinge starting but both firm, 16 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. First UK edition, first impression, printed from the first issue American plates with the misprint reading "help" instead of "helped" at p. 257, line 4; "some copies contain 16 pp. inserted advertisements, with no significance for issue" (Stott). "The novel was coolly received in Britain and America and became a best-seller only after an effusive review by the influential American critic and distinguished novelist Theodore Dreiser in the New Republic (25 December 1915), in which he described the book as of 'the utmost importance' and its author as a 'great artist'" (ODNB). The English edition in this condition is very uncommon. Rothschild Maugham Collection 85; Stott A21b. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. [London, United Kingdom]
