History of the Recent Discoveries at Cyrene
Day and Son, London, 1864. A beautifully bound copy of this archaeological study regarding findings in the ancient Greek, later Roman, city in modern day Libya. The first edition of this work. Written by the Scottish Engineer, archaeologist and diplomat known for his involvement with the excavations at Cyrene, Sir Robert Murdoch Smit and his fellow historian Lieutenant E A Porcher. Porcher and Smith spent two years on this expedition which was permitted by the British Government. Following their return they gave a large quantity of Cyrene sculptures and artefacts in the British Museum, including Apollo of Cyrene, which they found in 121 pieces. This work is an illustrated account of Smith and Porcher's report on the Cyrene excavations. Gift inscription to the recto of front endpaper 'George Du Pre Porcher, from his affectionate brother, Christmas 1864'. Second inscription dated 1902 below this one. With a frontispiece, and eighty-six plates. Collated, complete. A smart copy of this important archaeological study. In a contemporary morocco binding. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Small loss to the tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Tidemark throughout the work, heaviest to the first and last few pages, mostly affecting the gutter. Occasional light spots to pages. Very Good [Attributes: First Edition]
