THE SAME INTEGRAL WOODCUT WRAPPERS ON DIFFERENT BOOKS ¶ [2], 9, [1] p. | 12mo | pi^2(pi1+A^4) | 168 x 104 mm --- [2], 43, [3] p. | 12mo | A^12(A11+B^12) | 165 x 98 mm ¶ A distinctive pair of provincially produced popular romances, from the same Limoges press and utilizing the same decorative woodcut wrapper. We find editions of Lucas et Claudine ranging from ca. 1715 to ca. 1816 and separately published editions of Madeleine-Angélique de Gomez's Jean-de-Calais from ca. 1760 to 1840, all of them scarce. The latter first appeared in the author's Journées amusantes (1722?) and should not be confused with Jean Castilhon's Histoire de Jean de Calais sur des nouveaux mémoires. Madeleine-Angélique de Gomez (1684-1770) thought she married rich, only to find her husband saddled with debt. She took to writing to earn a living. ¶ Both chapbooks are in perhaps the most elusive kind of decorated proto-publisher's binding: integral block-printed self-wrappers, the use of which dates back to the 15th century. The rear cover of Lucas et Claudine has letterpress on the recto, clearly indicating the wrapper was printed with the text--rather than added by a bookbinder, for example. "It may well be that these integrated wrappers, which have been noted mainly on books of which only one or two copies have survived, have been the cause of their own destruction. For the most part they occur on slight little books of a popular sort which could easily be, and probably were, sold unbound--merely sewn or stabbed" (Jackson).
