Wilpert, Joseph (Hrs.)
Die Malereien der Katacomben Roms (The Paintings in the Catacombs of Rome) 2 Vol. set (Complete)
Herdersche Verlagshandlung, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1903. Folio. XIX, [1], 596 (Text volume), 1 leaf (Title), 267 leaves (Plates). Original 3/4 brown cloth over golden cloth covered boards, with black lettering to spines and front covers. Exhaustive and authoritative study of the early Christian frescoes of Rome's catacombs with a complete set of striking photographic reproductions. This monumental work is divided into two volumes, of which the first contains the text illustrated by 54 in-text figs; the second is made up entirely of plates to the number of 267 (more than one-third being published for the first time), of which 132 are in color. In the second volume, the author has placed the plates in a chronological order, thus helping to understand more clearly the gradual development of early Christian art. The splendid 132 chromolitographic plates have been realized by Danesi, Rome. Some rubbing along edges of binding. Front joint of second volume (Plates) reinforced by a yellow binder's tape. Ex-Library copy, with sticker at tail of spines, bookplate on inside of each front board, and pocket on inside of back covers. Upper margin of plate 82 partly stuck to the verso of plate 81. Minor foxing to very first and very last leaves of text volume. Text in German. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good, plates in very good … [Click Below for Full Description]
