Germany, ca. 1560?. TABLE OF WINE PRICES ¶ 1 broadside | Full-sheet | 286 x 323 mm ¶ An early broadside table of wine prices, probably sixteenth-century, the combination of currencies possibly suggesting use in southern Germany (gulden, schilling, heller, ort, and funffer). Our source, a German auction house, pegged the date at ca. 1560, consistent with the typography. We find only a handful of German analogs, none of them broadsides, all of them octavos with no indication of folded tables: VD16 F3109 (Frankfurt, 1556); VD16 ZV6088 (Basel, 1556); VD17 23:258041W (Stuttgart, 1608); VD17 23:258708M (Kassel, 1617); and, apparently not in VD16, Ein new Wein Rechnung Buchlin auff Wurttemberger Landt Eych (Stuttgart, 1598). Our table provides prices for different quantities by the Füder (tun), Eimer (pail/bucket), Ohm, and Maass. The caption beneath may indicate an effort to adapt a booklet to this single-sheet format: "Es ist hievor ain Weinrechnung büechlyn in...vil bogen zerspraitet..." Our table appears to capture at least as much data as one Nun volgt ein weinrechnu[n]g auff das Hertzogthumb Wirtenberg, a discretely titled six-page section in VD16 F3109. ¶ The reason for the table's production remains unclear, with textual loss partially to blame. We lack the name of a vendor or printer. One tantalizing line in the caption is damaged: "The use of this table..." ("Den gebrauch diser Taf[el]..."). Another sentence begins, "Item ain Burg[ermarkt?]...," possibly indicating official use.
