HOGG, James
The Suicide's Grave: Being the Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner
J Shiells & Co, 1895. 1st Complete Uncensored Edition. 13.5 x 19.5cm green cloth boards with dark green titles and decoration to the front and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, (x) 266pp, with 7 tissue guarded photogravure illustrations by R Easton Stuart. The books presents very well with clean boards, bright titles and firm sharp corners. The bottom edge looks as though it has been pushed a little at the spine's edge and, although not visible, there is a loss of shine to the bottom spine edge corner of the front panel. (This appears to be the result of a spillage as there is a small faint corresponding mark on the front pastedown - images are available if required). There is a hint of cockling beneath the second "i" of "JUSTIFIED" and the "e" of "SINNER" on the front panel. Internally much cleaner and brighter than is usually found, there is no name inscription or bookplate and just very occasional spotting mainly to the prelims, last few pages and uncut edges. All tissue guards are present and undamaged. All in all a very good looking, scarce 1st Uncensored Printing of Hogg's anonymous 1824 novel, virtually ignored at the time, and now regarded as his greatest work.
