The Works of Horace, Translated Literally Into English Prose; for the Use of Those Who are Desirous of Acquiring or Recovering a Competent Knowledge of the Latin Language
London: J Newbery, 1762. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 6.5" by 4.5". None. The second edition of this prose translation of Horace's works. Rebound in a lovely half calf binding with marbled paper boards. The work was first published in 1756 and was subsequently reprinted frequently due to its accessible nature. Early editions of this work are hard to find, as the text was very often used in schools as it was a great educational tool for those learning Latin. Horace was a leading Augustan poet. His lyrical poems were penned in hexameter verse and the caustic iambic. This work sees his titles translated into prose. In Latin and English, printed in parallel. ESTC No. T52767. A beautifully bound and well preserved set of this popular Roman poet's works. Rebound, in quarter calf bindings with marbled paper boards. Externally, excellent condition with very little shelfwear. Prior owner's inscription to the title pages, J Pansoney Cath Hall. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with just occasional light spots. Very Good Indeed.
