The first edition of this comprehensive and uncommon travelogue on Fanny Parke's twenty-three years spent in India at the start of the nineteenth century. Scarce in the original cloth. The illustrations to this work are from drawings by the author,her friends and Indian artists. This work is based on the journal Fanny kept for her mother during her time in India and it focuses on the Indian people and their culture. Parkes revelled in travelling to the parts of India that were not overtaken with British society. Everywhere that Parkes visited, she sketched and several of her sketches feature in this book. The Oxford DNB notes that Parkes 'admired the dignity and grace of Indian life, in which she considered European ways were often an ugly intrusion. Although an Anglican, she was sceptical about attempts at religious conversion'. This work also shows Parkes' observations regarding the zenana which she managed to experience as her friend Colonel William Gardner married a Muslim princess. Collated, incomplete.
