[Tulsa and Langston, Ok, 1926. Two volumes. 103 black-and-white mounted photographs and twenty-six loose photographs, all between 2 1/2 x 2 inches and 5 x 3 inches, plus fifteen ephemeral items, and forty-seven mounted clippings (including a page with thirty-two tiny student portraits likely extracted from a yearbook with names annotated in pencil). Oblong quarto. Contemporary black cloth photograph albums. Heavy staining to one album, moderate soiling and staining to other, covers almost detached. Most leaves detached, numerous photographs faded, several torn or creased. Overall good condition only. A rare collection of photographs and ephemera documenting the educational exploits of Dovie Mae Wilkes, an African-American student at Langston University in the mid-1920s. The compiler hailed from nearby Tulsa, and attended Langston in the years following the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. The album is replete with images and ephemera related to Langston University, founded in 1897 and still the only historically-black college and university (HBCU) in Oklahoma. The university is located about seventy-five miles west of Tulsa and just forty miles north of Oklahoma City. Here, Dovie Mae Wilkes documents her college experiences with a selection of photographs and ephemeral items. Several of the photographs appear to have been taken around campus and Wilkes includes four Langston University postcards showing various buildings.
