Macmillan & Co. 1912/ 1914 (all first editions in this publication).. 22 volumes. Tall 8vo. Uniform maroon cloth lettered & decorated in gold. Nice set with uniform colour on spines (a bit faded compared with the covers) .The extremities are a bit rubbed, and there are a few minor marks. Inside there is some foxing, mostly on endpapers and frontispieces, and most pages are just lightly browned on one or two edges. Overall very good to good. Each vol. contains a photogravure frontis. and a map. The Wessex Edition is in every sense the definite edition of Hardy's works and the last authority in questions of text. Vol.1 contains an essay of primary importance which Hardy wrote specifically for this edition. It explains the classification of his novels and offers a brief "apologia" for his work. (Purdy). Not present here are the 2 volumes of Poetry: "Satires of Circumstance, Moments of Vision", and "Late Lyrics and Earlier, The Queen of Cornwall" .
