GELL, William.
The Itinerary of Greece. With a commmentary on Pausanias and Strabo and an account of the monuments of antiquity at present existing in that country compiled in the years MDCCCI: II: V: VI.
London T. Payne, 1810. FIRST EDITION. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). Half-title, engraved title, dedication, pp.xvii+[19]-171+[7, index]+[1, errata]+[1, list of plates]. Contemporary polished calf, borders with a quadruple gilt fillet, green silk page marker, very neatly rebacked to style. A very good, clean and fresh example. Complete with 28 full page illustrations comprising maps, plans, views, and including the title page, but bound without the actual list of the plates. The half-title merely says Argolis and it should be noted that this work concerns only the region known as the Argolid Peninsular in the north-east of the Peloponnese, south of Corinth, and should not be confused with Gell's other itineraries. "The Argolid was visited by Gell briefly in 1801/2 and at greater length in 1805-6 when he made an extensive tour of the Morea.A handsome production" (Navari). (Blackmer, 662; Abbey 129). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
