The human body in full colour
Anatomische Darstellungen zum Privat-Studium.Leipzig, Wilhelm Lauffer, (1828-1833). Small folio. With 78 anatomical plates by J.F. Schröter after Zimmermann, numbered I-LXXVIII: 4 lithographed and 74 engraved, all but 2 coloured by hand. Contemporary half calf. [4], [130] pp. First edition of a rare anatomical atlas by a German surgeon of Leipzig, containing anatomical plates engraved after Rosenmüller, Bell, Diedemann etc., with short explanations on accompanying leaves. Intended as a less expensive anatomical atlas accessible even to impecunious students, it was separately published in 20 parts, to spread the purchase cost. As with many popular publications, almost no copies seem to have survived. The anatomical plates, nicely coloured, are a reliable representation of German anatomical teaching of the time.Spine cracked at hinges, otherwise a fine complete atlas. Callisen XXI, 3150; not in Hirsch, Waller, Garrison-Morton; NUC.
