Letters of the right honourable lady M--y W--y M--e, Written During Her Travels in Europa, Asia, and Africa, to which are added Poems by the Same Author. Stereotype edition.
Paris, Didot the elder, year 7, [1798], Stereotype Edition. 12mo. Full calf, spine designed and lettered in gilt. Marbled end papers. Wear to joints, spine ends and tips worn, piece torn from the top of the initial publisher's ad leaf; generally very good. Annotated by Thackeray on the verso of the front end paper: "These witty letters, written by one possessed of good taste [are] calculated to not only entertain but give real profit to the reader. They are very [old?] and what's more [I've] realised that I can scarcely write upon this paper. W. M. Thackeray." On the recto of the rear end paper Thackeray has written: "A capital work - one which should [do] a great deal of good to the rising generation of letter writers. W.M. Thackeray"; and beneath it: "Of course, I do not attempt to say that better letters were not written, but I do say that these are good in the extreme. WMT". Above Thackeray's annotations on the front fly is the ownership signature of Frances Elizabeth with an indistinct date (184?). Bookseller's label from Rouen on the front inner cover.
