New York: Harper & Brothers, 1860. This is a great condition bound volume of "HARPER'S WEEKLY - A Journal of Civilization" for the entire year of 1860 (Volume 4). There are 52 issues in all beginning with January 7 and ending with December 29 - a complete run of all 52 issues for the year. The volume opens with an illustrated title page, followed by a General Index. The highlights of the volume are the May 26 issue (which features a front cover profile of ABRAHAM LINCOLN as a candidate for the Republican party) and the November 10 issue (which features a front cover portrait of ABRAHAM LINCOLN from a Mathew Brady photograph). (There is also a 2-page montage of the Republican Presidential candidates in the May 12 issue, including Lincoln.) The December 22 issues contains a full-page SANTA CLAUS engraving. There is a wonderful 2-page BOXING MATCH engraving in the May 5 issue (the match depicted is between Heenan and Sayers and is considered to be the first ever world boxing championship). The November 24 issue contains the first serialized installment of "Great Expectations" by CHARLES DICKENS; there are a few illustrations of Dickens within the volume. Oversized - the volume measures 16" tall x 11 1/2" wide x 2 1/4" thick. Scarcely found in this condition.Condition:Stain at the top-left corner of the front cover; there are a few scuffs to the leather on the spine; small tear to the leather at the bottom of the spine; wear to the corners.
