Shriners' Western Road Trip: Members of the Kora Shrine of Lewiston, Maine, Visit Glacier National Park, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Salt Lake City in 1915
1915. Commercial string-tied photograph album (7" x 11") containing 161 black and white (all 3 1/4" x 5 3/8"), mounted one to a page, with 4 additional snapshots laid in. Records the 1915 journey of members of the Kora Shrine of Lewiston Maine to attend the annual session of the Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine -- held that year in Seattle. Traveling by a combination of rail and automobile, the men and their wives took the opportunity to see the West, spending time at Glacier National Park on the way to Seattle, then driving down the coast all the way to San Diego before heading east to Salt Lake City and Colorado Springs, where the album ends. The conference in Seattle, held by the recently established Nile Temple, was quite a production. According to the temple's website, "Never before or since has a Temple of that age and size ever attempted a pageant spectacle of such magnitude. The Seattle Chamber of Commerce contributed $150,000, and Nile Temple raised an additional $150,000 to entertain 40,000 visitors to Seattle to a most colorful, seven-day event." The album includes several photos of the streets of Seattle decked out for the celebration, as well as shots of the travelers posing with and dressed up as Blackfeet Indians at Glacier, the shoreline at Golden Gate Park, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, Stanford University, Big Trees Park in Santa Cruz, the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, Paso Robles Hot Springs, San Diego and the Panama-California Exposition, an ostrich farm, and Catalina Island.
