CHRONICA DURCH JOHANN CARION, fleissig zusamen gezogen, menniglich nützlich Zulesen
1556. (i) + 11 + 431 + (25) leaves (each leaf being numbered rather than each page), including final blank, title printed in red and black, fraktur text throughout, paper generally age-browned throughout, lower corner of title leaf cut away, a good mellow copy in a contemporary binding of pictorially and ornamentally embossed pig-skin over wooden boards, both binding and publication dated 1556, metal clasps (one complete, one lacking the hasp), no place of publication although Berlin is mentioned on the verso of leaf 2. Small coronated bookplate inside front board. This edition was not found in Adams, nor in NUC, nor in the British Library Catalogue. The impressive binding is a little worn at the corners and has the odd wormhole, but the pictorial representations of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection (front and back boards) are clearly visible. This edition of Carion's Chronicle (which was first published in 1532) was extended after his death in 1537, taking the history up to the year 1554, with a considerable proportion of the text dealing with the events of the Reformation in Germany. Carion's Chronicles became an important work in Lutheran and more generally Protestant millennarian thought. Size: 4 x 6.5 Inches [Attributes: Hard Cover]
