"McCormick published his two-volume work based on his voluminous diaries at the age of eighty-four, at his own expense. He covers three expeditions, the Antarctic expedition ..., Parry's attempt to reach the North Pole in 1827...; and the voyage to Wellington Channel in search of Franklin in 1852-53 including the boat expedition under his own command..." (Rosove). It includes plans for reaching the poles, preservation of health in the polar regions, an autobiography plus correspondence and miscellany. The handsome illustrations are based on McCormick's own pencil sketches, including five panoramas from the Ross expedition. Rosove 221, variant d, (colons after "London:" and 7 gilt stars on front board, yellow endpapers, an early issue, without the 16pp "Memorandums" that was added later.)
