In three very good minus, first edition volumes. Rebound in burgundy cloth, leather labels with gilt lettering on spines. Page edges are fragile and with a number of chips and closed tears, mostly minor. Some foxing internally, mostly on pages around illustrations. Shadow transfers from lithographs to facing text pages. A few leaves pulling loose at inner margins. A total of 140 lithographic plates (mostly litho tints; 17 hand-colored), 3 lithographic reproductions of colored woodblock prints, numerous word-engraved illustrations through-out the text. Vol I: Title page is loose. Includes 3 fold-out maps, one is separated at the fold; also includes two 3-fold out color painting facsimiles, included in the total illustration count. Vol II: Illustrations are mainly animals and fauna, also 16 pages of heavier (similar to card stock) nautical charts of trade wind graphs; and 14 pages of the facsimile of the Treaty with Japan, in Japanese. Vol III: pp. iv & v are loosened but holding. The focus of this volume is Observations of Zodiacal Light, with 328 observations dating from April 2, 1853 - April 21, 1855; 13 Moon Zodiacal Light observations from Nov. 21, 1853 - Feb. 3, 1855; and 12 Cassini observations from Feb. 27, 1685 - Nov. 14, 1687 ( … [Click Below for Full Description]
