As a respected playwright, she was also approached to write the prefaces to a 25-volume collection of British plays entitled 'The British Theatre' [1808]. Today, it is predominately on her first novel, 'Simple Story', on which her reputation now rests. First published in 1791, 'Simple Story' received critical acclaim, earned Inchabld £200 for its copyright, and went into four editions with its original London publisher, Robinson. It is now lauded by current feminist critics for its careful handling of the theme of female sexual desire. Here we offer the 2nd edition of this important work, which is, as is often the case, institutionally less common than the 1st edition.
