T Hobbes
The History of the Civil Wars of England
ont> Anon : London, 1679 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A very scarce, first edition copy of Thomas Hobbes' posthumously published work on the Civil Wars. Initially suppressed, this work was surreptitiously published following Hobbes' death. The first edition. This work was originally written during the 1660s and an authorised edition was not published until 1682. There are two other editions recorded the same year as this, which are not identified as a second edition to the title page. The first is a duodecimo edition with the same title with the author as 'T Hobbs' and another edition with the title 'Behemoth: Or an Epitome of the Civil Wars of England'. The ESTC records imply that Behemoth has priority over this present edition, however Macdonald and Hargreaves's assignation of priority to this present edition is conrimed by the 'Oxford Handbook of Hobbes' (2016). Hobbes initially wrote this work in 1668 but Charles II refused to allow its publication. Condition: In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, sound, with patches of rubbing to the boards and extremities. A little loss to the leather at the spine and board edges. Hinges are strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Prior owner's inscription to the title page, 'D Martyne' and to page 1. Worming to the 21 pages, not affecting any whole words. Small losses to the head and tail of front and rear endpapers. Just the odd spots to pages. Overall Condition: Good Only.
