BUCHANAN (Georgio).
Psalmorum Davidi paraphrasis poetica, nunc primum edita. Eiusdem Buchanani Tragoedia quae inscribitur Iephthes. Caetera eius opera seorsum edita sunt.
(Genève), apud Henricum Stephanum, 1566. 16mo. 2 leaves. 284 pages. (inversion of leaves in the last quire). Full calf, gilt framing over the boards with a gilt medallion in the center (contemporary binding, rebacked, corners slightly bumped). First Edition of the paraphrase of the Psalms composed but the celebrated Scottish poet and humanist George Buchanan (1506-1582). "The book was issued simultaneously in two formats, 8vo and 16mo, with some differences in contents; it is the only book published jointly by Henri and his brother Robert II. Renouard believed that is was printed in Paris, and lists this title among the imprints of Robert II; but the use of Henri's device 9 proves conclusively that it was printed in Geneva" (Schreiber). The work is dedicated to the Queen of Scotland Mary Stuart, of whom the author was once the tutor - before eventually declaring against her. Very good copy nicely bound in a contemporary binding ornamented in gilt. Schreiber, The Estiennes, n°165 (for the 8vo edition).
