Wolf, J.
Naturgeschichte der Vögel deutschlands in getreuen Abbildungen und Beschreibungen. Falco peregrinus Linn. [A pair of plates].
Nürnberg, J. F. Frauenholz, [1821]. Folio (53.3 x 41.3 cm). Two finely engraved and originally hand-coloured plates. = Two magnificent bird illustrations from a famous and rare early German work on native birds, by the German ornithologist Johann Wolf (1765-1824). These two plates depict, respectively, the male, and female peregrine falcon, Falco peregrinus Linnaeus (in German, Wanderfalke). The engravings were made by Johann Carl Bock (1757-1843) after drawings by Ambrosius Gabler (1762-1834). According to Schlenker, an exact dating is not possible, but the work was completed in 1822. Some light, marginal toning; marginal tear skilfully repaired; light thumbing to the lower right margin; a few very small spots, and in all an excellent set. Anker, 336; Nissen IVB, 1007; Schlenker, 390.1. Not in Zimmer. Very good.
