London: Bloomsbury, 1999-2007. London: Bloomsbury,, 1999-2007. All seven Harry Potter novels in the luxurious deluxe format 7 volumes, large octavo. Original red, blue, green, purple, dark red, blue and black cloth with pictorial onlays, titles to front covers in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. No dust jackets issued. All in original cellophane wrap save vols. I & IV. Cellophane opened for vols. II and III. A fine set. First deluxe editions, first impressions, of the complete Harry Potter series. Recognizing the surging collector's and gift market for the series, Bloomsbury published a deluxe edition alongside the trade edition for Prisoner of Azkaban in July 1999, with retrospective deluxe editions of the first two books following that September, thereafter publishing deluxe alongside trade editions for all the following titles. The deluxe editions have remained much sought after by collectors, being larger than their trade counterparts, handsomely cased in full cloth rather than paper boards, with the same cover designs presented as pictorial onlays, and with the titles and Rowling's facsimile signature blocked in gilt. Errington A1(d); 2(e); 7(c); 9(b); 12(c); 13(b); 14 (aaa). See A7(c) note for the sequence of publication: Errington notes that the publication date for Azkaban is "unclear", and suggests it was issued on 27 September with Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. However, we can confirm that both the trade and deluxe formats were available for sale simultaneously.
