ARCADY' MONTECITO SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA

Splendid botanical catalog dated April 15, 1926 of the grounds of "Arcady", a 700+ acre estate in Montecito Santa Barbara by the Knapp family, this publication, as stated on the title page, with "compliments of Mrs. George Owen Knapp and Mrs. William Knapp", wife and daughter-in-law of Arcady founder. Arcady was developed by George Owen Knapp (1855 - 1945), industrialist and philanthropist, who by 1894 had founded the Union Calcium Carbide Company which he reconstructed as Union Carbide in 1904. He was CEO and President, and the Board Chair of Union Carbide until 1933. Knapp and his wife first purchased land in Monticeto in 1904, and made it their permanent residence in 1911, purchasing the 70-acre Arcady estate, and expanded its residential structures and lavishly landscaped its grounds, commissioning landscape architects Carleton Winslow and Francis T. Underhill.
