Photo Album and Scrapbook of a WAVE
Mostly Bronx, New York and Newport, Rhode Island, 1945. 10½" x 14½". Internally cord-tied, full embossed leather commercial album. 60 pages with 83 black and white photographs, 69 items of ephemera and several news clippings; around three quarters of the items are adhered to pages, the rest are either loose or in corner mounts. Most photos measure between 3¼" x 2 1/8" to 5 5/8" x 3½", and approximately two thirds are captioned. Album very good with moderate corner wear and a small loss to the corner of the rear cover; photographs near fine or better, most ephemera very good plus or better, a number of leaves with minor edge chips; evidence of removal of one leaf and lacking eight photos (seven of which are formal portraits of WAVES).This scrapbook documents the wartime service in the WAVES of Sarah Thorndike from Concord, New Hampshire. It's a wonderful mixture of well composed imagery and rare ephemera. Prior to the war, Sarah graduated from the Boston School of Occupational Therapy in 1936 and was a registered occupational therapist specializing in "neuro-psychiatric" patients. In 1943 she completed basic training at Hunter College in the Bronx and her indoctrination at Bethesda after which she was sent to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, Rhode Island to work in her specialty.Most of the crisp photos were taken around the naval hospital and Hunter College and include a lot of posed group shots of the women in uniform.
