Japonesque - Over 125 Paper Napkins collected over a period 11 years by a Social Gadfly
1892-1903. Japonesque, Social Archive, Japanese Paper, WhimsyAn unidentified woman collected and retained over 125 decorated paper napkins, all Japonesque and printed on various forms of Japanese paper including washi and crepe. Over 65 are annotated in pencil as to date and event. One of particular note is from the Reading Club with over 25 titles and 30 individuals named on the napkin (1893) Another is a napkin signed and dated by one woman in 1891 and another in 1895. Other events included an I.U. A. M Sociable, P.O. of A. sociable, Chosen Friends, many surprise parties, Mechanic Social, Sunday School Class, Grand Lodge, weddings, Eastern Star events, Sons of Temperance, Christmas and more. Unless specifically annotated the collection only includes one copy of a printed design. Some of the napkins were quite decorative and striking while others were more subdued.Although the collector is unidentified, a good bit of sleuthing could most likely identify the owner and perhaps location given all the names found in the collection.
